Akwa Ibom Shuts 326 Illegal Schools
The Akwa Ibom State Government has shut down 326 illegal schools operating across the state, with over 15 additional schools closed in the ongoing enforcement exercise for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh, disclosed this during a ministerial media briefing in Uyo on Sunday, saying the crackdown was part of efforts to protect pupils and ensure schools meet government-approved standards.
Umoh explained that the government began the aggressive enforcement in September and October 2025 after giving proprietors sufficient notice from the third term of the 2024/2025 academic session through the holidays to regularise their operations.
He said the affected schools were shut for operating without approval, violating approval conditions, operating from unauthorised locations and providing substandard learning environments.
According to the Commissioner, inspections revealed schools operating from churches, residential buildings, bedrooms and partitioned self-contained apartments, with some having all classes from Primary One to Six in a single room. In some cases, teachers had only primary or secondary school qualifications.
The government warned that proprietors who reopen sealed schools will be handed over to the police for prosecution, adding that enforcement has now resumed across all 31 Local Government Areas for the new session.
