First Lady Unveils Food Bank, Donates N500m in Cross River
CALABAR — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Friday flagged off the South-South phase of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Cross River State, while also announcing a N500 million relief package for victims of the recent fire at Calabar Mall.
Speaking in Calabar, Mrs Tinubu said three food banks were launched simultaneously in the state at Edeba Primary Health Centre, MCH Ikom, and MCH Ogoja to provide nutritional support to children under six, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
She disclosed that 1,179 beneficiaries had already been enrolled nationwide, with 2,089 food packages distributed so far. Describing the initiative as “a deliberate and sustainable response to food insecurity and malnutrition,” she said it aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to improve food security and healthcare outcomes.
The First Lady urged state governments to adopt the programme to expand coverage, noting the South-South launch brings the number of zones covered to five out of six.
In addition to the food bank, Mrs Tinubu announced N500 million on behalf of the President for 18 business owners affected by the Calabar Mall fire, with each receiving N25 million, and an extra N50 million donated to women groups in the state.
She also inaugurated a TETFund/RHI ICT Experience Centre at the University of Cross River to boost ICT skills among youths.
