Nigeria Army Rescues 33 Kidnapped Victims in Zamfara State Operation
In a significant security operation, the Nigerian army has rescued 33 people who were kidnapped by armed men while traveling through Zamfara state in the northwest. Troops and police responded to the abduction in Tsafe, intercepting the kidnappers and forcing them to flee into nearby bushes.
All 33 victims were rescued without casualties. The rescue comes amid a recent series of successful operations, with more than 300 kidnapped people reportedly freed in separate incidents. Ransom kidnappings continue to be a major security and political problem in northern Nigeria as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
The Nigerian military has intensified operations in the northwest region, deploying additional troops and air support to combat the growing threat of banditry and kidnapping. Zamfara State has been one of the hardest-hit areas, with armed groups terrorizing communities and abducting travelers on major highways.
Governor Dauda Lawal commended the security forces for the successful operation and called for sustained efforts to eliminate criminal elements in the state. The rescued victims are receiving medical attention and counseling, according to state authorities.
Security analysts have noted that the recent successes demonstrate the effectiveness of the military's new strategy, which combines kinetic operations with community engagement and intelligence gathering. However, they warn that lasting peace will require addressing the root causes of banditry, including poverty and lack of economic opportunities.
